1. Wash your face daily
Good skin starts with clean skin. This might sound like an obvious skin care tip, but surprisingly most people wash their face but fall way to short of getting it clean. We have a layer of dead skin cells that are like sticky glue. These dead skin cells severely clogged pores. Every product we apply on top of these dead skin cells, sticks to them like glue and does not penetrate that layer. Over time, this build -up leaves our skin looking dull, sallow, ruddy and rough. Our skin continuously generates new cells. This process slows with age. Exfoliating these dead cells help to “wake up” your natural cell turnover. At JoAnn Francis Medical Esthetics, we will guide you on the proper way to wash and exfoliate, based on your individual needs and the condition of your skin.

2. Wear Sunscreen
Skin Cancer is the most common type of Cancer in the U.S. UV Radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Skin cancer can also come from tanning beds and sun lamps. The good news is skin cancer can almost always be cured when it is found and treated early. We also know that Sun exposure is one of the main causes of pre-mature aging of the skin, fine lines and wrinkles are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin from sun exposure. The first advice is to see your dermatologist at least once a year for a full body exam. Second advice is to never leave your house without your SPF. Always apply 20 30 minutes before exposure, even on a cloudy day. It is recommended to use nothing less than a 30 SPF. Re apply after 2 3 hours. Always use a broad spectrum SPF.

3. Moisturizing vs. hydration
What is the difference? Our skin have Lipids, called Hyaluronic acid this is considered responsible for the skins hydration, and prevents water loss, or dehydration and dry skin, which makes skin appear more wrinkled. ‘Moisturizers’ trick our skin in thinking it is moisturized on the surface, so this sends the message to the skins natural lipid barrier that they do not need to work. Some moisturizers actually have ingredients that actually dehydrate the skin. (just like most chap sticks, lip balms and lipsticks), the more you use them the dryer your skin gets. By re-hydrate the skin, the skin becomes soft and supple, fine lines and wrinkles become less apparent, and can wake up your own natural lipid barrier function. Once the skins natural lipid barrier is functioning properly, most of the time moisturizers are not needed.
